Black Hawks JV 20, Poston Butte 12

October 23, 2011  By Laurel Adamcik

The Poston Butte Broncos came to Gilbert Thursday to tangle with the Williams Field Black Hawks JV in a defensive classic. The Black Hawks were a swarm of red and black, shutting down the Poston Butte running game and knocking down passes, while the Broncos kept the Black Hawks’ explosive offense bottled up. Poston Butte finally punched though the Black Hawks defense and found the end zone at 4:17 of the 2nd    quarter, but failed to convert the point after touchdown. The Black Hawks responded by driving the length of the field on a kick-off return and a long run by Jacob Anderson,  and culminating in a receiving TD by Nick Adamcik on 4th down. Riley Gaumnitz converted the PAT, and the Black Hawks went up 7-6. A Broncos fumble gave Williams Field the ball with a short field, and Cole Patterson scored on a quarterback keeper, diving across the goal line with 33 seconds left, and the Black Hawks took a 14-6 lead to the locker room.

The defense continued to dominate in the second half, led by Conner Mathers, Nick Bialkowski, Cristos Ortega and Cliff Weybrecht, as the Bronco running game was continually punished. A blocked punt by Weybrecht gave the Black Hawks the ball on the goal line, setting up an easy TD by Anderson, and stretching the lead to   20-6 at 2:28 of the 3rd quarter. Poston Butte was not finished, however, scoring again at 7:20 of the 4th quarter and closing the gap to 20-12. The Black Hawks, looking for the knock-out punch and in the red zone, turned the ball over on downs in a one score game with one minute to go, but the defense held and the Black Hawks won 20-12. The season ends with the JV record 5-2, one game canceled.
